These pictures don’t do these dishes any justice. But trust me. I cook and eat these all the time at home.

And I still have a life.

I don’t spend all my time in the kitchen.

I might spend 30 minutes making a meal – and I’m usually taking my sweet time about it.

But that’s not how everyone feels.

And I can easily teach you all of the same recipes, methods, techniques, and tricks that will allow you to do the same thing.

Today, I promise if you read this through to the end, I’ll show you how to easily learn some mad kitchen skills and greatly improve your kitchen game, and do it while you’re turning out plate after plate of delectable, nutritious food that supports your lifestyle and doesn’t compromise your time.

And you’ll look forward to getting in the kitchen because preparing delicious and wholesome food will become natural, easy, and FUN.

And the truth is, you’ll start looking forward to cooking!

It’s about loving food as a part of LIFE and not making it any bigger (or smaller) than it should be.

Ok…so let me tell you a little about me (cause I know you’re curious.)

Hi, I’m J. Looney, chef, food educator & mentor, and culinary evangelist. 

My passion for food has been a lifelong pursuit of food knowledge, cooking and preparation techniques, and of course, making and enjoying delicious food.  

My father has worked in kitchens since before I was born, so I grew up with food as a central theme.

His kitchens were enchanted places for me.

The sounds of steam and sizzling food…

The cadence of large mixers and steady chef’s knives…

The smells of herbs, spices, and deliciousness wafting through the air…

All of these informed many of my earliest experiences with food.

So you see, cooking is literally in my blood. 

My first job was washing dishes at a local burger joint when I was just 14 years old. 

Now let’s be clear, washing dishes is awful work, but the fact is, I loved every minute of it. 

But over time, I worked my way up through the ranks and in several different kitchens. 

I’ve done just about every job there is in the restaurant industry, from dishwasher to Executive Chef.

 I’ve even been fortunate enough to share my knowledge and passion teaching a course on Cultural Aspects of Food at the University of Utah (more on that on the blog).

In one way or another, food has always been a central theme to my life, and it’s something I’m deeply passionate about. 

Food is how I communicate and express emotion. 

Food is my love language. 

Food is my religion, no joke.

Can I get an AMEN?

Owing to my experiences over the years, I’ve been very blessed to work with some of the greatest food scientists and creative minds in the foodscape, and I’ve learned from every single one of them, from dishwashers to Executive Chefs, from bus boys to business owners. 

My mission here is to share the good word, to challenge and expand the way you think about food, and most importantly, CHANGE HOW YOU EAT!

You see, I know what it’s like to be a busy professional – I’ve worked in corporate America, and with the notable differences of sharp blades and hot fires, chef life isn’t that different. I work long hours. It’s mentally and physically exhausting. And at the end of the day, I just want some good, home cooked food. I just spent 10+ hours in the kitchen, I’m not that interested in cooking some more!

And I know that these emotions and experiences are all too familiar to you! You know what this is like, because you live it every day, and I know that deep down, you want something different, you want to change, you want MORE.

So that’s what I’m offering – an easy way to eat mouth-watering, home cooked, nutritious meals during the week with minimal time and effort invested.

You want that classic image of family & friends seated around a table, a glorious feast spread out before them, with fresh fruits and vegetables, roasted meats, and plenty of everyone’s favorite side dishes, right? 

I mean, coming home after a long day at work, and being surrounded by the people that are most important in your life to share a hot, home-cooked meal sounds ideal, doesn’t it? 

Something to fill the soul and nourish the body, can I get an AMEN?

But the reality is that preparing a meal like that can take time and effort, and after work, how many of us really have energy or interest in that? 

And to further complicate matters, more often than not it’s been HOURS since you’ve eaten, so you’re borderline hangry, and really just need some food in your face so you don’t burn everything to the ground out of desperation, right?

What if I told you that with a little planning, you could have a nutritious, mouth-watering meal on the table every night in under 30 minutes, all while improving your skills in the kitchen?


Planning is everything when it comes to eating well, as it is with most things in life.

Taking the time to plan the week’s meals, make a grocery list, and do all of the initial preparation is all that’s required, really.

Now, I ain’t gonna lie, it does take time!

Time you likely don’t have, or would rather invest elsewhere.

But you see, folks, my job is to make it even easier for you – I’ll do all the planning!

I’ll teach you the skills and mindset of mise en place (chef language, it means everything in it’s place – ORGANIZATION). And by prepping some items in advance, you can save time on the weeknights, and make cooking that much easier!

And you can be saved from boxed meals, fast food in a bag, and freezer meals!
