This may be a little Gump-esque, but nutrition is like a road trip – you’ve got to know where you ARE to get to where YOU WANT TO BE.
Think about it – if you decided that you wanted to drive to Las Vegas, would you only worry about the speed limit? Or would you keep an eye on the fuel gauge, change your oil and rotate your tires before you left, have a map/GPS, make reservations for your stay in Vegas, etc?
Nutrition is pretty much the same. My dear friend and nutrition mentor, Rachel Jones, spent the last week at an obesity conference in Boston. One of the key points she learned (and subsequently shared with me) was the importance of a body monitor – something like FitBit or BodyBugg that monitors your activity level, heart rate, etc.
Let me break it down – if you want to lose weight and increase your fitness and health, counting calories alone won’t EVER get you to a lasting, sustainable goal. Sure, if you reduce your caloric intake to 1,000 kCals a day, you’ll lose weight, but at what price? You’re sacrificing HEALTH for WEIGHT LOSS. That’s not smart. To return to the Vegas analogy, it’s like jumping behind the wheel of a car, setting the cruise control for 55 MPH, then putting on a blindfold, and thinking you’ll make it there.
WAKE THE FUCK UP!
This is one of the MAIN REASONS that people struggle with weight loss, health and fitness long term! You’ve GOT to take a MUCH BROADER VIEW if you want lasting change.
So, a body monitor and regular weigh-ins will tell you how many calories you’re actually burning and where your weight is.Awesome. But, that’s only PART of the equation!
The other part is how many calories you INGEST.
TRACK YOUR FOOD!
Track every bite of food that goes into your mouth hole. There are dozens of great apps available for doing this. Find one, use it. Most of these apps interface beautifully with most of the fitness monitors out there. It’s pretty easy to find a combo that works for you.
NOW YOU KNOW WHERE YOU’RE AT!
Calories ingested, calories burned, balance of fat/carb/protein, recommended levels for all of these…
THIS FEELS COMPLICATED! YOU SAID IT WOULD BE EASY!
It IS easy. Unfamiliar at first, perhaps, but NOT complicated or cumbersome at all.
With all of this information about YOU at your fingertips, and in real-time, you can MAKE BETTER CHOICES. This is the START to changing the mindset! Knowing these numbers about yourself can GREATLY INFLUENCE your decisions on what to eat, when to eat, exercise, etc., that ALL SUPPORT YOU IN YOUR GOAL!
Now, go get tracking!
